New York City Suburbs

These two projects were renovations of and additions to existing old houses with historic character.

The original house in Greenwich, Connecticut was a 1700s farmhouse, which had a substantial extension built in the 1960s. The owners thought that the addition of another farm-like building might highlight the original house and mask the addition. Rather than a barn and silo, which had been proposed by a previous architect, this 3500 square foot addition uses the natural stone and wood of the original house and accents its simplicity and symmetry. The addition has a master bedroom and dressing room on the second floor and children’s bedrooms and a recreation room on the first floor.

The original house in North Salem was a small stone cottage used for weekends. The purpose of the expansion was to encourage grown children and grandchildren to visit. The existing garage and kitchen were reconfigured into a dining room, and a larger cook’s kitchen and screened porch were added. A new garage building with apartment encloses the drive court. The owners collected Stickley furniture and Craftsman glassware, and antique wood was used for cabinets to display their collections and panel the dining room.
