Dutchess County
The architect bought this small farm cottage when it had been abandoned for several
years. Time and weather had destroyed all the interior finishes, and the house
was dark and small. To open up the space, the living room ceiling was removed,
creating a double height space. The ceiling structure was reinforced with steel
cables, and the remaining attic was turned into a loft bedroom. A large skylight
was added to the living room and to the small-attached shed, which was renovated
into the kitchen. Later the garage was rebuilt with a bedroom and bathroom added
in the same style as the original cottage. The budget was minimal; and the detailing
was simple, with choice of fixtures and hardware being chosen for their spare
appearance. This house was featured in Home Magazine. |
