Sagaponack 2
The clients for this Sagaponack house purchased a small ocean lot near their
existing summerhouse for beach access. It was the site of a swimming pool and
the foundations of a previous house that had fallen into the ocean during a storm.
With new regulations, it was unclear if any building could be constructed on
the small site. The client decided that a small guest and party house should
be built to provide amenities for beach use. After spending only a few hours
at the ocean site, all decided that it was worth the effort to build the largest
house permitted on the magical site.
The style was designed to compliment the main house. Similar materials were repeated,
but the interiors were styled to be more casual. Cabinets are made from douglas
fir and concrete to look weather-beaten. The wall with the view of the ocean
is designed of aluminum and glass. Large wood and aluminum awnings at the pool
and the deck provide shelter from the blasting sun. The house is divided into
two wings with an open stair and hallway separating the two sections of the house.
The stair hall is on axis with the existing pool which was allowed to remain.
The pool was renovated and integrated with a long boardwalk leading down to the
beach. |
